Well, well, well, look who it is…I’m back, in black!! After a little hiatus and a mid 20’s life crisis i realised that Tastey is where it’s at, y’all!! No but seriously Tastey is the shiz, hence why i’m here!! So if you haven’t already, come in and say your happy i’m back, and then buy something so i really feel your love!! ;o)

There is a new addition to the Tastey empire and that is the super delicious, super funky cafe, known as Caffiend. As the name suggests it caters for caffiene’s, hidden away down the ‘freshly’ painted alley at 78 Grafton St (behind Tastey), this coffee hotspot is for the sensory adventurous and features FNQ’s best coffee, fresh tastey food, lush tastey beats and the norths biggest legal graffiti and street art wall! PLAZMALAB – FUNKY, QUIRKY,WICKEDLY WICKED DESIGNS – I would very much like to meet the designer of this label cos i am intensely intrigued as to what is going on in his/her head when his/her creates the designs for this ultra cool tee’s. There is so much detail within each picture and the way each tee tells a story from the graphics on the front to the back and vice versa is in genius!! Every guy needs to own one!

Lunch = Sweet potato, slow roast red onion, rocket with balsamic dressing – omg just had this today and couldn’t get enough of it!! Sooooooo good – what an awesome combination!!

Music = What sounds are rocking when you come a knocking?

Art = All the colours of the rainbow….awwww!!

If your into colour then all you need to do is take a walk down the Graff Alley on Grafton st and see what some talented cairns dudes can do with a little bit of paint and a lot of skill. I personally know it takes skill because i have since tried my hand at graffitti and i managed to spray out a flower not so clean and sharp but rather big round shapes on one big canvas!! Come in store to check out a pic of my efforts, not as impressive as funny!! Tastey commissioned around 20 local guys and 1 “Phibs” from Melbourne to come and spray their talent over the 50 metre long wall that makes up the Graff Alley.

To Buy; Kings Way – ONLY $69 – very very very 80’s cool. This book has it all. It documents in detail the beginning of graffiti history in Melbourne. Jam packed with photo’s of pieces and pics of the boys in their 80’s get up, with stories and quotes to explain how it really was back then, style wise, acceptance or lack of, and what inspired each artist. Get one before there all gone (only 2 left).

LTJ Bukem Fabric 46

It may not seem right that one of the pioneers of DnB and not to mention someone who was around at the big bang of dance music known as Acid House!! But none the less we are graced with a mix from the Legendary LTJ Bukem. With his label ‘Good Looking Records’ being a main feature of this edition it definitely has the flavour synonymous with LTJ and his label (clearly).

“With the mix I really wanted to highlightwhat I was doing as a DJ. I could’ve sat there with a computer and done what a lot of people do: a computer mix, which is great fun as you can do what you can’t do live. But for me personally, I wanted it to be exactly what I do on a Friday night, strictly dubplates and records. I also wanted to represent people on the mix that I am working with on Good Looking, who I have a strong belief will have some longevity in what they are doing, and are going to be prolific artists in their own right. For me, it doesn’t matter who the artist is, it’s just about good music. Thats been my ethos since day one”

After perusing the mix myself, I am overcome with memories of the drum and bass I used to listen to and seeing LTJ during my break at a festival I was working at in Sydney (needless to say I was late getting back to work!). The Refreshing sounds, the worldly experience that flows through LTJ’s expertly delivered track selection. Even if DnB is not your main stay audibly check this out. Thank you once again Fabric (London, not Cairns)

Man in the Mirror

Well if the Michael Jackson fever hasn’t got to you then check this out. This is a new project from rhymefest utilising MJ’s vocal and combining them with some talented new hip hop artists, there is some humour along the way with MJ dropping something in his interview. There are some really funk tracks laid out here and vocals to match. A couple of times it can get tough but all in all it’s a great CD and fans of Hip Hop and MJ should find this one with the best of intentions!!

Good Energy (A singles collection)

I found this delightful write up on my juice carton.

RSD, perhaps better known as Bristol bass and drum music stalwart Rob Smith (one half of respected production duo Smith and Mighty), has been pushing bass heavy rhythms for more than two decades. He remains firmly at the forefront of Bristol’s endlessly inventive music scene, with a staggering discography and a range of projects encompassing dub, jungle, 2-step and dubstep, From his musical beginnings playing guitar in local roots reggae band Restriction, Rob’s music has always had a strong dub aesthetic.

More recently, Rob Smith has found a new home as RSD, comfortably adapting to the rolling, sub- heavy rhythms of dubstep. With releases on internationally respected labels such as Punch Drunk, Tectonic and Earwax, RSD’s sound is typified by impossibly heavy soundsystemtesting sub-lines and junglist dub breaks. The irresistible energy of tunes such as 2007’s infectious junglist roller “Pretty Bright Lights” and 2008’s speaker destroying dread-fuelled steppers “Over It” & “Jah Way” has rapidly cemented them as anthems!

Highly Recommended!!!!

The DVD counterpart of this release follows the development of hip hop and it’s influence from Jamaican Dub. I think after hearing the tracks on the CD (and also the DVD it is clear that the influences stretch much farther than just hip hop. Many styles around today carry some influences from the sounds featured in this release. Key names, from both reggae and the electronic music world, talk about the birth of this genre, how it helped to change the way we perceive music and how its presence can still be felt today.

Just follow the bass lines!
